Venue de Lisbonne, l’équipe Muro Atelier est la rencontre de trois architectes aux cultures différentes (Portugal, Italie et France) mais partageant une perception commune des architectures, environnements et patrimoines. Lemot“Muro”-“Mur”enportugaisetitalien–estlacomposantepremièred’une architecture tout en étant support de métaphores dans l’imaginaire collectif, entre frontière infranchissable, appui bienvenu, ou encore passage obligé vers la liberté. Joana et Vincent se sont rencontrés à l’ENSA de Montpellier en 2008 et ont ensuite connu Ugo, diplômé de Politecnico di Milano, lors de leurs divers travaux en agence à Paris de 2014 à 2018. Ensemble, ils se construisent une nouvelle identité partagée à travers des projets d’architecture, de graphisme et de design, faisant de chaque opportunité une création consciente et contextuelle. Aujourd’hui installés à Lisbonne, c’est un plaisir partagé de pouvoir revenir à Montpellier pour participer à ce rendez vous artistique dont ils ont pu suivre l’évolution pendant leurs années d’étude.
Based in Lisbon, Muro Atelier is the encounter of three architects with different backgrounds (Portugal, Italy and France) sharing a common approach on architecture, environment and heritage. Muro (meaning wall in portuguese and italian) is an essential architectural feature as well as a source of methaphorical visions in the collective imaginary. A wall can be at the same time an hermetic boundary, a statical support or the necessary gate to freedom. Joana and Vincent met in 2008 attending the ENSA Montpellier and they met Ugo, who graduated from the Politecnico di Milano, while working for several architectural firms in Paris from 2014 to 2018. Together, they build up a new shared identity working on architectural, industrial and graphic design. Each project is a new opportunity for a conscious and contextual creation. Currently living in Lisbon, it’s a great pleasure for them to return to Montpellier in order to take part of this art festival they originally got to know during their studies.

Entrer dans une cour montpelliéraine et se sentir immergé dans un paysage lusitain : telle est l’expérience spatiale que souhaite offrir l’installation. Le bleu des azulejos apporte une nouvelle tonalité à la cour et transit la mémoire d’une autre localité. La beauté prend ici forme dans la rencontre de deux identités patrimoniales. Cet espace de partage physique parvient à créer un paysage hybride qui nous transporte. L’élément de céramique devient unité d’espace et l’installation s’adapte à la composition des façades intérieures. En travaillant par transparence, les fresques se superposent tel un voile sur les murs, offrant une nouvelle matérialité à la cour. Avec ses codes esthétiques baroques, l’azulejo renvoie à la beauté ornementale en architecture. Souvent jugée comme superflue, elle est ici le matériel principal de l’installation. Les histoires que décrivent les fresques apparaissent au fil des déambulations et permettent le voyage par la contemplation.
Step in a courtyard from Montpellier and feel immersed in a Portuguese landscape: This is the experience that the installation wants to offer. The azulejo give a new blue shade to the courtyard and bring the memory to an another place. Beauty takes shape when two heritages meet. This space creates an hybrid landscape which brings us far away. The repetition of a same clay tile creates a global homogeneous space. The composition of the existing facades works as a base for the design of the installation. Working with transparence, these mural frescoes overlay the courtyard as an added layer. Under this barocos apparence, the azulejo reveals a new approach to ornementation in architecture. Generally perceived as unnecessary, this ornementation becomes the main material of the installation. The story told on these murals appears slowly by moving around the courtyard, allowing to travel through contemplation.
